What True Growth in Business Looks Like

business growth

When it comes to business growth, many owners equate success with endless activity. I’ve been there, thinking that busier equals better. Juggling another social media platform or yet another webinar, hoping that somehow the results would magically appear.

But true or real business growth isn’t about being busy for the sake of it. Instead it’s about focusing on the right work and taking intentional action that moves your business forward. Sometimes that looks slow and gentle, and I’ll be honest: other times, you will need to put in the work. Creating that balance can be challenging, and, from experience, can tip you back into being busy for busy’s sake. Why?

Several reasons: stuff happens, life happens – a new shiny thing distracts us. The time we had created to work on our business is eaten up by landing new clients, firefighting, or, in the old days, the dreaded phone call from school about a sick child.

There’s a quiet frustration I see again and again in capable business owners, and sometimes it comes with a roar.

They want growth. They know they’re ready for more. But instead of moving forward, they’re stuck waiting — waiting for results, waiting for the perfect plan, waiting for the right time. I’ve been there too, endlessly tweaking, overthinking, and occasionally binge-watching something completely unrelated to avoid a tough decision.

Usually, it’s at the roar stage that they reach out to me, knowing there has to be a better way to achieve balance in their business and seeking help to find it, so they can build momentum and achieve consistent growth. So, they can wave goodbye to feast and famine.

What Real Business Growth Looks Like

When we talk about business growth, it’s easy to assume we’re only talking about numbers.

And yes — growth can mean increased revenue, more clients, or a bigger team. It can look like employing people for the first time, expanding your services, or creating something that reaches further than you ever imagined. It can also look messy, imperfect, and occasionally terrifying — because real growth usually isn’t neat.

But growth is also about impact. It’s about the difference your business makes — to your clients, your community, and your own life.

And it’s worth saying: wanting more money is not something to apologise for. More money can bring more choice, flexibility, and breathing room. Financial freedom can allow you to invest back into your business, support others through employment, take time when you need it, and make decisions from a place of intention rather than pressure — both in your business and outside of it. There is nothing wrong with wanting a business that supports you well.

Finally, growth rarely looks like a straight line; there will be ups and downs, good times and times when you want to roar.

Growth Isn’t About Busyness

Most business owners I work with don’t lack ideas, ambition, or capability.

What slows growth isn’t a lack of vision — it’s focusing on the wrong things.

Hesitation to choose the right priorities, to commit to the work that truly moves the needle.
Hesitation to embrace the messy middle — the hard, sometimes unglamorous work that real growth requires.

I’ve been there, too. The temptation to chase every shiny tactic is real. Sometimes it’s easier to schedule a new Instagram reel than tackle that confusing pricing structure you’ve been avoiding.

The Growth You’re Looking for Is On the Other Side of Intentional Action

If your business feels stuck, flat, or slower than you’d like, it’s worth asking an honest question: Where am I focusing my energy, and is it moving my business forward?

You see, growth rarely comes from doing more. Instead, it comes from doing the right things consistently and trusting yourself to adjust as you go.

That doesn’t mean reckless action. It means intentional action — aligned with your goals, even if the path isn’t obvious yet. Yes, sometimes you’ll stumble, but that’s where the fun (and learning) happens, and it’s easier to get back up with a business coach or mentor by your side … just saying! 😊
