Why Strategy Over Speed Leads to Better Business Growth

Business Strategy over Speed

In business, it’s easy to believe that moving fast is the key to success, or quicker than the competition. We sadly live and operate our businesses in a world that praises quick action, fast decisions, and constant motion—the overnight success. But speed without direction can send you running full steam ahead without knowing where you’re running to.

That’s where strategy over speed comes in, and it doesn’t mean slowing to a crawl or overthinking every move. It simply means taking time to decide where you’re heading and why. Because without that sense of direction, you can find yourself scattered, reactive, and exhausted from chasing too many things at once – I know this because I’ve done it!

A good business strategy creates focus — it helps you move forward with purpose rather than pressure.

What a Business Strategy Is

When people hear the word “strategy,” they often envision lengthy documents, intricate diagrams, or concepts that belong in a corporate boardroom, before running to the hills. But a business strategy doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, it shouldn’t be.

For me, my strategy fits neatly on one sheet of A4 paper. I create a simple table with sections such as Business Operations, Client Experience, Marketing, and Financial Growth. Under each one, I outline the projects, actions, or areas of focus that will help me progress in that area. It’s simple, visual, and effective — and most importantly, it’s something I actually use.

Your business strategy can take whatever form makes sense to you. The key is that it’s meaningful — that it connects what you’re doing day-to-day with where you want to be. Without that connection, it’s all too easy to get lost in the busyness of business, ticking things off without ever feeling like you’re moving forward.

What a Strategy Isn’t

A strategy isn’t a wish list of things you hope to achieve one day. It’s not a collection of random goals scribbled on the back of an envelope. And it’s certainly not something you create once a year and then never look at again.

A strategy is a living guide — something that grows with you and your business. It should be simple enough to use, flexible enough to adapt, and powerful enough to keep you focused when distractions appear.

How to Create a Simple Strategy That Works for You

If you’re ready to create a business strategy that moves you forward, start small. Even a one-page plan can drive the deeper strategy needed to build a sustainable, multi–six-figure business. Try these three steps to begin formulating your plan, which will move you toward your success:

  1. Define your focus areas. What are the main parts of your business that need attention right now? Examples might be operations, client experience, marketing, finances, or personal development.
  2. Decide what success looks like. For each focus area, what would ‘progress’ mean? Be clear on the outcomes you’re aiming for — not just the tasks.
  3. Outline your next steps. Choose one or two actions that will move each area forward in the next 90 days. Keep it realistic and achievable.

Once you have this, you have the beginnings of a strategy — one that reflects your priorities and supports how you want your business (and life) to feel.

Why Strategy Over Speed Matters

There will always be times when speed matters — such as hiring slowly and firing quickly, or acting quickly on a great opportunity. However, when it comes to long-term growth, strategy always prevails over speed. Think of the old fable of the tortoise and the hare: it wasn’t the one sprinting ahead who reached the finish line first, it was the one who took a steady, intentional approach.

The same applies in business. A well-thought-out plan allows you to move with confidence, rather than constantly second-guessing yourself or jumping between ideas. It provides a framework to evaluate decisions against, ensures your focus is on your goals, and helps you avoid distractions.

Purposeful Progress Wins

Strategy, as opposed to rushing forward or in, isn’t about doing less (although it might be); it’s about doing what matters most, focusing on the right projects, tasks and activities. It’s the difference between being a busy fool and building something that lasts.

When you choose a slower, more purposeful pace, you give yourself time to reflect, adjust, and grow in a sustainable manner. You start to see steady, consistent progress that’s far more rewarding.

Because in the end, it’s not the business owner who runs the fastest who gets ahead — it’s the one who knows exactly where they’re going.
