Efficiency Versus Growth: Achieve more with less effort

Efficiency versus growth. What does it mean if you’re starting out or stuck in the thick of it? Which is more important?
First, you can’t always be efficient. Like… when you’re curled up under a blanket with a Lemsip in one hand and the energy of a damp tea towel. Which was me last week. Covid had struck (again), my brain was foggy, and my body said nope. But my business? It kept ticking along.
Not because I powered through, and I certainly didn’t have the energy to dig deep. Instead, I have systems in place and have been working for some time to streamline and make my business more efficient. I’m always looking for ways to smooth business operations, and it paid off. last week.
Those behind-the-scenes recurring tasks that happened without me gave me the space to breathe. They meant the business kept working while I sipped Lemsip and stayed hydrated.
Throw in my 90-day plan, and I knew where to focus my attention when I did have the energy. And my content plan meant that no decisions were required; they had already been made.
This blog (and my latest YouTube video on Efficiency versus Growth) focuses on the quiet kind of efficiency that creates room for meaningful growth, without needing you to be at 100% all the time. The small changes and ‘things’ you can implement that are so often overlooked as not significant enough to warrant your attention. But as I have just proved, they matter!
Efficiency Versus Growth: What’s the Real Difference?
We’ve all been there: buried under a mountain of to-dos, all tabs open, jumping from task to task, and checking our social media to see what everyone else is doing. Head down, busy, without feeling like you’re getting anywhere, not knowing where you’re heading!
It’s the “to-do list” trap: endlessly ticking off tasks, adding more, and adding those tasks that weren’t on the list but you decided to do. It’s when you’re moving from one thing to the next with no real sense of progress or achievement. But, as you probably know, “busy doesn’t always equal productive” and can be a sign that you’re focusing too much on the day-to-day, rather than on growth.
Efficiency is optimising your existing systems, tasks, and processes so you don’t burn out. It is making what you have and are already doing work for you.
Growth, on the other hand, is about expanding your business, reaching new clients, increasing revenue, and hitting your financial goals.
The good news…
When you focus on efficiency first, growth becomes easier and more sustainable. Because with solid systems, your business growth can happen more quickly and without you feeling overwhelmed and spinning in circles.
By focusing on efficiency first, you build a foundation where your systems are aligned and can handle increased demands without breaking down. It’s like upgrading your car before a long road trip—you’re setting yourself up for success so you can handle the journey ahead without stress.
Actual growth happens almost magically when your business runs smoothly and your systems work quietly in the background. This is because when your systems are solid, you have more time to focus on growing your business.
Small Tweaks, Big Shifts
Sometimes, the best way to grow is not to do more but to optimise and streamline what’s already working. When you have space to breathe, you’ll make and act on your incredible decisions and move forward more easily. You will have more time to do what you love, creating financial and time freedom, and you’ll do it in your own incredible way.
Here are a few small but powerful tweaks you can make right now to help get your business running smoothly and create space for growth:
- Automate your invoices and payment reminders. Stop chasing late payments.
- Set recurring reminders and tasks. Move client check-ins and content planning out of your head and onto your calendar.
- Schedule recurring meetings with yourself. Block out time for CEO check-ins, content creation, or tackling the tasks that always get pushed aside.
- Use email templates. This will save you time on common emails like “thanks for booking” or “here’s your next step.”
- Batch schedule your social posts. Do this once a week for 30 minutes to save yourself the daily “What should I post?” headache.
- Pin your most-used browser tabs. Keep essential tools just one click away.
- Take voice notes to capture ideas quickly; it’s easier than typing when you’re low on energy.
- Create a “Today” folder on your desktop. Focus on what matters now.
- Batch your notifications. Less interruption means more focus.
- Add links to your email signature. Save time answering the same questions repeatedly.
- Declutter your phone screen. Keep helpful apps in view and move distractions out of sight.
These little adjustments may not seem like much on their own. But combined, they can give you back hours of precious time and energy. More importantly, they create a solid foundation for your business to grow, and you don’t have to do them all at once!
Planning (So You Can Grow)
Efficiency isn’t just about what you do daily or the smooth running of your business; it’s about setting yourself up for long-term success. That’s why having a 90-day and content plan is so crucial. These tools helped me keep my business moving forward when I was sick. I didn’t have to make big decisions or take on everything at once. My systems were already in place, guiding me step by step.
Equally, and importantly, the longer-term plan helps you to see clearly where automation and streamlining are needed.
So, my friend. Know that with the right systems and plans, you can keep moving your business forward, even on low-energy days. Know that when efficiency is dialled in, growth becomes easier, and you will be leading your business to success on your terms.
