Embrace the Olympic Spirit: Lessons for Solopreneurs and Small Business Owners

The Olympic Games are a testament to human perseverance, skill, and the pursuit of excellence. As we watched athletes from around the world compete for gold in Paris, we were reminded of their dedication, hard work and the plan needed to achieve such high levels of success.
So, what can we mere mortals, solopreneurs and small business owners learn from these incredible athletes? Here are my five key takeaways and how to apply them to your entrepreneurial path.
🏅 A Training Programme: Building Routines and Habits
Just as athletes follow rigorous training programmes. As a solopreneur or small business owner, you need a structured routine and good habits that propel you forward. Consistency is key. Athletes don’t achieve greatness overnight; they put in hours of practice every single day.
Action Step: Develop a daily routine that includes tasks to achieve your long-term goals. This might be market research, customer outreach, or skill development. Then, regularly assess your progress and tweak your routine as necessary.
Remember: Each athlete has a different training programme, depending on their discipline. So, your ‘training programme’ MUST align with your vision, ambitions, and reference point. (Your reference point is your present business position, your responsibilities, and the hours you want to give your business, which will differ from the next person.)
🏅 The Mindset of a Winner: Overcoming Challenges
Athletes face numerous challenges, from injuries to competition setbacks. What sets champions apart is their mindset. They view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Similarly, setbacks are inevitable in business, so developing a robust and resilient mindset will help you navigate your challenges as gracefully as a synchronised swimmer and come out the other side stronger.
Action Step: To cultivate a growth mindset, when something doesn’t work out as you’d hoped or when faced with a challenge, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” and “How can this make me better?” This perspective will help you stay motivated and have you jumping obstacles like a world class hurdler!!
Remember: Cultivating a growth mindset is a journey and requires that you surround yourself with those who share this mindset. Equally, a challenge for you might not be one for the next person; it has to do with your reference point, where you’re at, your experience and knowledge—your perspective.
🏅 A Dream or Vision: Guiding Your Journey
Every Olympian starts with a dream—to win a gold medal. This vision guides their training, influences their decisions, and keeps them focused. As a business owner, having a clear vision is crucial. It gives you direction and purpose and helps you make decisions that align with your goals.
Action Step: Define your vision. What do you want to achieve with your business? Write it down and revisit it regularly. Let this vision guide your daily activities and significant business decisions, ensuring you stay on track to achieve your dreams.
Remember: Life has a habit of throwing curve balls, and they can arrive before you’ve worked out how to juggle the last one. Some life challenges or events may require you to revisit your vision and ambitions, which is absolutely okay because it’s your business and your rules. You get to decide what is important to you and what matters in the business, and in doing so, you might return a curve ball with a whomp that an Olympic tennis player would be proud of!
🏅 Rest Days: The Importance of Recharging
Even the most dedicated athletes take rest days to recover and recharge. Similarly, entrepreneurs must periodically step away from their work to rest and relax because overworking can lead to burnout and negatively impact productivity and overall well-being.
Action Step: Schedule regular breaks and downtime. Use this time to do activities that rejuvenate you, whether spending time with loved ones, engaging in a hobby, learning to dive from the ten-meter board, or simply relaxing. A well-rested mind and body will help to ensure you serve your business and clients at the highest level.
Remember: You can’t pour from an empty cup. Therefore, to serve your clients at the highest level and be all that you need to be for your loved ones, self-care (you) IS the top priority. Plus, learn how not to feel guilty about rescheduling appointments when you need to and never for taking an afternoon, day, or week off because you deserve it, and your business will thank you for it!
🏅 A Coach: Guidance and Support
No athlete reaches the Olympics alone; they have coaches who guide, support and challenge them. As a business owner, having a mentor or coach can provide invaluable insights and encouragement. They will help you to strategise, support your decision-making, and motivate you to take brave new steps.
Action Step: Seek out a business coach or mentor. Discussing your strategies and challenges with a coach can accelerate your progress and help you achieve your business goals. Find the right coach for you who will provide the guidance and support you need.
Remember: You don’t have to do this alone, and the adventure is way more fun when surrounded by the support you need! Plus, and this took me a long time to learn, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. And I’m pretty sure no sportsperson has achieved a gold medal (to my knowledge) without a coach and a fantastic support team!
The Journey of an Olympic Athlete: A Long-Term Commitment
It’s important to remember that Olympic athletes don’t achieve their goals through quick fixes, ten-step programmes to their personal best by last Tuesday. Their journey is marked by years of dedication, continuous learning, and unwavering commitment. As a business owner, you need to adopt the same long-term perspective. You need to accept that success is a marathon, not a sprint, and requires sustained effort, patience, and resilience.

One final thing:
The Olympic Games inspire us with stories of perseverance, dedication, and triumph. We can learn immensely from the athletes’ journeys as solopreneurs and small business owners. By incorporating structured routines, maintaining a resilient mindset, keeping our vision clear, allowing ourselves to rest, and seeking guidance, we can confidently navigate the entrepreneurial path and achieve remarkable success.
Finally, at the Paris games, I noticed the camaraderie in sporting and country teams, how they support and admire one another, and how this crossed borders. With sportsmen and women hugging their competition—celebrating and supporting one another. This unity gives me hope and is a powerful final message to us entrepreneurs and business owners that we are stronger together.
