Hustling in Business Isn’t All It’s Cracked Up to Be: Redefining Success
In the fast-paced business world, ‘hustling’ may appear to be the golden ticket to success or what you have been led to believe. Seek the evidence, and you will find countless stories of entrepreneurs who seem to have or do work around the clock. Those who have risked everything and given up so much. So, it’s easy to believe that constant busyness is the key to achievement. If you’ve ever felt this way, you’re not alone.
But it makes my blood boil, and I’m sorry, but I don’t buy it. I don’t believe that if you’re unwilling to get up at 4 a.m., you don’t want it enough. That if you’re not ‘hustling’ every day and don’t make fifty calls before the sun is up, you don’t want success. Success has nothing to do with how many hours you stay at your desk, the number of sales calls you make a day or how ruthless you can be.
Personally, I would need to go to bed before my kids get up at 4 a.m., meaning I would have to give up time with my husband or friends—my kids! Equally, I don’t want to be at my desk for over eight hours. Instead, I want to live a life worth living. 💯
Genuinely, I don’t believe you should or need to sacrifice your evenings, weekends, relationships, health, or joy to achieve success!
What is Your Reference Point?
Before I get into talking about ‘hustling’, I want to touch on ‘risk’- your risk level. While cancelling a lunch date might be okay, remortgaging your home to achieve success might not. This is where your reference point comes in, and you may:
- Have responsibilities like children,
- Be a carer or have personal health challenges.
- Feel uncomfortable investing in your business because of the additional financial stress this will put you under.
You might not want to be a multi-millionaire. Instead, seek financial and time freedom without sacrificing your joy. So, find your reference point, let this guide you, and permit yourself to do it your way.
Right, let’s Dispel the Myth of Hustling
Hustle culture tells us that constant work equals productivity and success. But if you’ve ever found yourself on the brink of burnout, you know this isn’t the whole truth. Pushing yourself hard can lead to stress, health problems, and, ultimately, a decrease in effectiveness.
Overworking often results in diminished returns, as fatigue can impair your ability to think clearly and make sound decisions. It stops you from being productive and making progress, not to mention the strain it can put on your personal relationships.
Therefore, it’s not about how many hours you put in but how you use them; balance is essential for long-term happiness and success.
Busy Doesn’t Equal Successful
No. Being busy in your business doesn’t mean you WILL or ARE successful, and I can say this from experience. In my early years, I was in the busy zone and proudly wore the badge. Until I realized I’d confused busy with being productive. Have you ever ended a busy day feeling like you accomplished nothing meaningful? Yep, that was me. You see, ‘real’ productivity involves prioritising tasks that align with your goals.
Successful individuals focus on high-impact activities and delegate where possible, ensuring their efforts are directed towards what truly matters. They do not do everything, add things to the to-do list without thought, or wear the busy badge! Think quality over quantity!
Even if you cannot outsource work or areas of your business right now and need a team to delegate to, focusing on fewer, more significant tasks leads to greater satisfaction and achievement.
The Problem with Following Blueprints
In our quest for success, we often look to those who have made it and try replicating their path. While learning from others can be valuable, it’s important to remember that your journey is unique. What worked for someone else might not work for you due to different circumstances, markets, and personal strengths – a different reference point. Plus, following someone else’s blueprint can stifle your creativity and prevent you from finding solutions that fit your unique situation.
Authentic success comes from aligning your business practices with your values and vision. It’s why I support and help my clients build personal blueprints.
Redefining Success on Your Terms
Defining success on your terms is crucial to build a sustainable and fulfilling business. Start by setting goals that go beyond financial metrics. Consider your overall happiness, work-life balance, and the impact you want to have on your community. Learn to say no to tasks and opportunities that don’t align with your goals and protect your time for what truly matters. Appreciate the small milestones to stay motivated and celebrate your progress because success is a journey, not a destination.
Prioritise your health and well-being because a rested and happy entrepreneur is more creative, resilient, and effective.
True Success Comes Not from Hustling but from Finding Balance
Balance comes from prioritising what matters and crafting a unique path. By defining success for yourself, you can confidently build a fulfilling and sustainable business that aligns with your values and goals. You deserve to find joy and fulfilment in your work, and that starts with understanding and embracing your path.
Take a step back, reassess, and remember that your journey to success is as unique as you are — hustling is not required!
