How do you know if a business coach is right for you?
How do you know if a business coach is right for you? When thinking of, or choosing a coach there are many ifs, buts and maybes that you may struggle with.
Often with a heavy sprinkling of fear, which in turn raises questions such as ‘will it work for me and is it what I need’?
Trust is key to a successful relationship with your coach. Trusting them but also (and a much bigger piece of the puzzle, in my opinion) yourself to take the leap. I use the word leap, as that is exactly how one of my one-to-one clients once described it.
Business coaching can appear intangible, yet it is results-driven – your results. The leap of faith comes from believing that you can do what is necessary, are ready to take the next step and trust the coach to help you.
Recently, someone asked me, “How do I ensure that a business coach is the right one for me?“ This is a fabulous question, and it is important to me because I am a business coach and work with coaches to help grow my business.
Before I answer that question, I want to clarify that I am not doing so to convince you that I am the right coach for you. It’s quite the opposite. I am answering to empower you to decide who is—even if it’s not me.
WHY should I work with a business coach?
You may be thinking about working with a coach for many reasons. You may feel stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated. Perhaps you have exciting plans but struggle to bring them to fruition. Or you may need guidance in a particular area of the business.
Whatever the reason, working with a business coach will help you gain clarity and provide you with support and accountability. They’ll help you step out of your comfort zone and set goals that will lead to growth. You will grow in confidence, which will result in you making better and faster decisions.
They will assist you in developing the skills needed to run your business more efficiently and provide a confidential space to work through issues and challenges you may be experiencing.
A good business coach will never tell you what to do. Instead, they will guide you to find your creative solutions and answers. They will then support you in making the changes, taking action, and getting started.
So, how do I decide whether a business coach is the right fit for me?
Below are some things for you to think about:
- Make a list of all the characteristics that are important to you.
- Get clear on what you want to achieve in your business
- Think about the challenges you face and the challenges you need support with.
- Consider how you work best. Would you prefer the community spirit of a group programme or the faster pace of one-on-one coaching?
Most importantly, if you’ve decided that you are ready to work with a coach, be:
- Ready to commit and say yes (or no)
- Open and honest
- All in and prepared to do the work and finally
- leave the excuses behind
And remember, a good business coach will always tell you if they are not right for you and refer you to someone who is.
