The Myth of Perfect Timing: Why You Don’t Have to Wait in Business

Timing—we wait, we hope—we postpone. We push it back because we are not ready. The timing isn’t right.

Then, enter stage right (or left), and summer is here. The season of sunshine, beach trips, and children running wild with glee. Although this might be a rather Enid Blyton view. But you get the idea, and yes, school holidays are just around the corner.

So, you might already be worrying about how you will juggle the kids, clients, and business and considering what you can push back.

You might be telling yourself that no business is done the minute kids race through the school gates, throwing their ties in the air. You might believe that the business world stops as everyone rushes off to sip cocktails in the sunshine and that no business will be done until Autumn. Is any of this true?

While I appreciate that juggling kids and business is a reality for some, I can assure you that business is still done; you don’t need to wait. And while I’m using the summer holidays to get my point across, you will always find a reason to wait if you want or need one!

For now, back to the Seduction of September

We’ve all been there. Staring at the calendar, you see a sea of commitments and think, “I’ll start in September. It’ll be the perfect fresh start.” It’s easy to believe that the end of summer will magically clear the chaos of daily life, paving the way for uninterrupted productivity. Spoiler alert: it won’t.

The Reality of Waiting

The harsh truth is that waiting for the ‘perfect’ time to start a project, enrol in a course, or launch a new business venture is like waiting for a unicorn to gallop through your office and offer you a ride to success. It sounds delightful, but it’s not going to happen. Here’s why:

1. Life is Always Busy: September might look peaceful from here, but it’ll bring its own set of challenges. Kids going back to school, new work projects, and the lead-up to, dare I say it … Christmas. There’s no ‘quiet time’ in the business world unless you choose to have one, which is okay, and you can.
2. Lost Momentum: Delaying action can often lead to lost enthusiasm. That spark of motivation you feel now may fizzle out by the time autumn leaves start to fall. Seize the moment while the fire is burning, even if you start slowly and in your own fabulous way.
3. Opportunity Cost: Every day you delay starting, you risk missing the opportunity. Plus, there is a high chance you will keep pushing back the project and won’t take action even when the time is ‘right’.

The Benefits of Making the Perfect Timing Now 

Embracing the chaos and starting now, even when it seems inconvenient, can lead to surprising benefits:

1. Building Resilience: Managing your goals amidst the summer madness will make you more resilient and adaptable. These are essential traits for any successful business owner.
2. Beating Procrastination: Procrastination is a sneaky thief. By starting now, you’re taking a stand against it, proving you’re committed and capable.
3. Gaining a Head Start: While others are waiting for September, you’ll be making progress. When everyone else starts to plan, you’ll already be ahead of the tame.

Practical Tips to Start Now

1. Break It Down: Take that big, intimidating goal and break it into smaller, manageable tasks. Tackle one small task each day, and you’ll be amazed at the progress you make.
2. Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that summer may not allow for 100% focus, and that’s okay. Even 50% effort now is better than 0%.
3. Use the Summer Wisely: Incorporate learning or planning into your summer activities. Listen to a business podcast while lounging by the pool or brainstorm ideas during a long car ride.

The world doesn’t stop for perfect timing, and neither should you

So, go ahead. Start that course, book a discovery call with a business coach, launch that project, or make that call. Your future self will thank you, even if your current self would rather be at the beach. Who knows, this time next year, you could be sipping cocktails because you have a thriving business that you love and the financial and time freedom you’d always dreamed of!
