It doesn't have to be perfect to start

Perfect, being without fault or defect, satisfying all requirements – complete. I’m not sure about you, but that version of perfect would result in me doing or trying nothing new. I would be fearful of giving it a go. Or spend days, weeks, or months making it perfect, which we know is impossible.

Impossible because in business, you need to try, sometimes, before knowing if it will work so you can improve it. See the positive impact, how it can be part of the solution, and the bigger picture – your journey.

Perfect prevents the journey

I genuinely believe business is a journey of lightbulb moments and excitement – things not working out quite as you expected. Every step, action and decision plays a vital role in your journey and growth.

So, don’t wait for perfect, all your pretty little ducks to be in a row. Instead, go for it, whatever IT might be for YOU.

Another definition of perfect is… having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics. It being, as good as it is possible to be.

I love that the word desirable has been used. And the final element rings true for me, as good as it is possible to be – in this moment and with what you know.

You don’t need it to be perfect because:

  1. It never will be, or it might be for this tiny moment you are in. Think of a website. It might be as perfect as it can be when published, but as your business grows and you evolve, the website will be less than perfect and need your love.
  2. Nothing started perfectly. For example, it took 2,774 attempts to arrive at the bamboo filament that made Edison’s light bulbs a commercial success. So begin, act – do it.
  3. Done is perfect. You had an idea; you took action and made it happen. You wanted to try something, start a business, podcast or blog and did. Well, if that isn’t perfection itself, what is?
  4. Growth is in the imperfect. It is how you will become an incredible blogger, hugely successful podcaster – coach, marketing expert – insert profession -. It is how you learn, grow and develop – how you become.
  5. There is no fun in being perfect. Well, not in my opinion, and I don’t know about you, but I want to have fun trying and exploring what is possible. I want to be on a magical journey of discovery.

Here is what I’ve recently started imperfectly

I launched a podcast, okay, not on my own. But here is how Challenging the Norm: His and Hers Look at Life and Business came about, and you can probably see where I’m going with this from the podcast title.

It started when I met a man, not on a dating site but on LinkedIn, and there was a connection from the off. Which resulted in an offline conversation when sparks flew and ideas flowed. We both felt a fizz, pop and a bang for what was possible working together.

However, we needed to start somewhere, so I suggested a podcast. The rest, as they say, is history. The first episode was published about sixteen to eighteen weeks after our first conversation – fast, furious, raw – it’s not perfect.

Just do it anyway

Over the coming episodes, we shall improve our technique. We shall pick up those missing elements we’d not thought about and laugh as we realise who we’ve yet to tell. There will be lightbulb moments when we go, ‘why didn’t we think of that earlier’ – or ‘how have we missed this’. And each time, we shall smile and laugh; and it will be FUN.

It will be a journey of discovery and wonderful learning, and on this occasion, I get to do it with my partner in crime Paul Snell.

Where is perfect preventing you in the business (or out of it)?

If you need a safe and confidential space to discuss a crazy idea, need someone to sense-check an idea and say, ‘go for it’, book a Discovery Call. As I’d love to hear your business goals, ambitions and crazy ideas., and if you need me to, I’m ready to say ‘go for it’.
