The number one rule for business is… there are no rules!

Nope, not a single one you MUST follow. Guidance, yes, good examples and blueprints that have worked for others and may work for you. And of course, good practice you may wish to follow. But you get to decide, and you get to make your own rules.

Rules prevent creativity

Rules of others prevent creativity, stop the flow of ideas, and lead to you not trusting yourself or your decisions. So you keep following the damn rules, blueprint, and guidance of others, trying to make them work. And in doing this, there is a high chance you will miss an opportunity or push a brilliant idea to the back of your mind.

You are stuck with the should I’s. Wondering if this, that or the other could work for you. You are trying something new before the last thing has had a chance to work and creating a storm of epic proportion that you are fueling! Crazy!

And while you are pushing, trying and even doing what you hate – the universe looks down and says, ‘she ain’t ready yet’. So, it sends you another rule to help you see the error of your ways. Then, if necessary, another, and if you’re still not paying attention, a truck.

Now when the truck hits me, and yes, there are times when the universe can see I’m not listening, it results in me throwing my arms in the air and shouting ENOUGH.

It happened recently. When I noticed that I was playing with my business, tweaking it. The truck hit, and I shouted, STOP PUSSY FOOTING AROUND LINDSEY. You see, I was getting into a tizz and considering this, that and the other. I was pushing to find a solution – a way forward. Until realising or instead remembering, there were no rules. I could do it anyway I liked.

Step back to spring forward

Over the past few years, I’ve been redesigning my business but sensed that something still wasn’t right. It was time for me to stop playing small and be brave, hence the pussy footing around statement. So, I decided to step back, review the business as a whole and map it out to see what I could shake out of the tree. Immediately, a plan began to form. It wasn’t the solution I needed, but it set me on a path where answers arrived while in the shower, drying my hair – and in those moments when I’d switched off. Finally, I no longer wanted to follow the rules, good practices, or blueprints; I was ready to do it my way.

Reviewing my business highlighted the rules I’d advertently begun operating by or had chosen to run the business by but NO longer served me. The mind map led to taking actions that resulted in me discovering valuable and powerful assets long forgotten, content for the solution that finally arrived from nowhere.

The journey so far, specifically the past twelve months, has been incredible. And I’m grateful for it because I AM now brave enough to move the business to the next level. A level that was not clear of until now, and I’m excited because I know that as I rise, so do my clients.

But (sorry, another one), nothing happens in the safety zone. It does, but not what you truly desire. Instead, dissatisfaction, overwhelm, lack, and you working all hours for little or no return, which doesn’t sound great or fun, does it?
