Laying the Groundwork for a Strong 2026: Growth Starts Today

It might feel a little early to be talking about 2026. After all, you might not have started the Christmas shopping and hunting down where you hid last year’s decorations. But if there’s one thing I know about business, it’s that growth starts today — right now, not in January when the world collectively wakes up and scrambles for a fresh start.
For me, this final quarter of the year is when everything starts to come together. I use it to plan for the next chapter — I review what’s worked, reflect on what hasn’t, and decide where to focus my time and energy.
Doing this now means I glide into January with a clear map for the first 90 days (and beyond). I have clarity of direction, I know where to focus my efforts, and I can start the year feeling purposeful — not playing catch-up.
It’s a rhythm that brings calm and confidence — and I encourage every business owner to embrace it. Because when you create space to think and plan before the new year begins, you start ahead of the game. Growth starts today — should you choose it to – with intention, reflection, and a strategy that fits you.
Reflect Before You Rush In
Before you start mapping out big goals for 2026, take a moment to look back. What worked this year? What didn’t? Where did you grow — and where did things stall?
Reflection isn’t about beating yourself up for what didn’t happen. It’s about recognising what did. Too often, we rush past the wins because we’re already onto the next “to-do”. But those wins hold clues. They show you what energises you, what attracts clients, and what’s worth building on next year.
(Tip: take 30 minutes with a coffee — or beverage of your choice — and jot down your top three business highlights from 2025.)
Remember: growth starts by acknowledging how far you’ve already come.
Refine, Don’t Reinvent
You don’t need to overhaul your entire business to grow. Sometimes the most powerful step is simply to refine what’s already working, and I know this from experience and learning, sadly, the hard way. Many of my early years were spent reinviting the business and everything in and around it; everything changed when I stopped doing this.
Refining might mean tightening your message, simplifying your offers, or saying no to the things that drain your time and energy. Think of it as pruning a rose bush. Cut back the excess, make space for new growth — and trust that what remains will bloom stronger.
The goal isn’t to do more. It’s to do better — and growth starts today, in the clarity that comes from focus.
Get Strategic (Without the Overwhelm)
This is where many business owners get stuck. Strategy sounds big and serious, but it’s really about direction. It’s deciding where you’re going and making sure your daily actions lead you there.
Start with your end goal: What do you want 2026 to look and feel like? Then reverse-engineer it. Break it down into quarterly focus areas, monthly goals, and weekly actions.
You don’t have to have every detail figured out (spoiler: no one does). But you do need to know your next step. Strategy isn’t about perfection — it’s about clarity and consistency.
When you approach it this way, growth starts today in small, deliberate, focused steps.
Plan for the Person Behind the Business
As you lay your foundations for 2026, don’t forget to factor yourself into the plan. What kind of year do you want personally? How do you want your business to support your lifestyle, your wellbeing, your family?
Because growth isn’t just about revenue. It’s about designing a business that works for you — not the other way around. When you feel aligned and energised, everything flows more easily.
Growth is easier with balance and boundaries.
Quick Tips to Clear the Decks:
Before you dive into a new year, create your guiding strategy documents… consciously make space—physically, mentally, and digitally —for the year ahead. And here are a few ways you can do that:
✅ Tidy your digital workspace. Clear your desktop, unsubscribe from those “just checking in” newsletters, and archive files you haven’t opened in six months.
✅ Review your finances. Check what’s coming in, what’s going out. Can you see where savings can be made? Minor tweaks now can create breathing room later.
✅ Wrap up lingering projects. The ones you’ve been meaning to finish “when things calm down”? Decide: complete, delegate, or wave it goodbye!
✅ Reconnect with your network. Drop a note (or Christmas card) to past clients, collaborators, or contacts. A simple “How’s your year been?” can open new doors for 2026.
✅ Take a real break – It’s not lazy; it’s leadership. A rested mind makes better decisions and spots opportunities others miss.
Taking time to clear the decks now means growth starts with a clean slate and a focused mind.
Growth Starts Today
2026 might sound far off, but the truth is, the seeds of next year’s success are being planted right now. Take time to reflect, refine, and plan. Give yourself the gift of clarity before the chaos of the festive season sets in. Then, when January arrives, you’ll already be in motion — calm, focused, and ready to grow.
