Lessons from quarter one: what's working, what's not and what needs to change

Quarter One doesn’t set the tone for the year or define where you’re heading. And it’s important to know this and not judge your entire year based on how the first few months have gone, because in reality, quarter one is just your starting point.

I have worked with clients who have panicked at the end of a quarter (or even a month) because they are not hitting or nearing their targets. This may have happened because a project was not signed off, a team member resigned, or the month or months didn’t quite go according to plan.

The key is to use what’s been learnt so far to make intentional adjustments. As a business coach, I help clients stop, pause, and find those lessons. I help them put the brakes on, explore what worked and what didn’t, and, most importantly, decide what needs to change.

Quarter One Lessons: Recognising Progress and Doubling Down

It’s easy to see what’s not working and overlook our progress – miss the small achievements and wins, which often provide valuable insights and reveal where we should invest more effort, not forgetting that those small wins can lead to significant progress.

  • Have you noticed an offer, service, or way of working that feels aligned and is achieving great results?
  • Are there marketing efforts that are bringing in engagement and conversations (even if they don’t feel like “big wins” yet)?
  • Have you felt a sense of clarity in certain areas of your business?

Tip: Note what feels natural and energising. Success often comes from refining what’s already working, not constantly reinventing the wheel.

What’s Not Working: Where Are You Feeling Resistance?

Identifying where things feel heavy or clunky is just as important as recognising your wins. Maybe it’s an offer that isn’t quite landing, a marketing strategy that drains you, or a habit keeping you stuck.

  • Are you overcommitting and spreading yourself too thin?
  • Is a particular mindset block (like reluctance to sell or self-doubt) holding you back?
  • Have you been trying to do everything instead of focusing on what will move the needle in your favour?

Tip: Not everything that “should” work is right for you. If something doesn’t feel right, give yourself permission to find another way – your way.

Implementing the Lessons From Quarter One

Now comes the real work—deciding what shifts need to be made so you’re not just busy but making meaningful progress.

  • Simplify: What can you streamline so you’re focused on impact, not just effort?
  • Sell confidently: How can you reframe selling as inviting the right people to benefit from your expertise?
  • Make space for growth: What do you need to say no to in order to say yes to the right opportunities?

Tip: Adjustments don’t have to be dramatic. Small, intentional shifts now will make a massive difference in the long run.

Quarter One lessons help you decide how the rest of the year unfolds, nothing more or less.

I help business owners refine their strategy, simplify their approach, and build momentum in a way that feels good and gets results. If you’re ready to make Quarter Two the quarter where you gain absolute clarity, focus on what matters, and shift what’s holding you back, let’s talk. Book a Clarity Call and let me help you decide your next steps.
