How to Stay Grounded and Excited Beyond January

How to stay grounded and excited beyond January

There’s something magical about the fresh start of a new year when you feel grounded almost without effort. Your gym membership is actually being used, your planner is still pristine, and the possibilities ahead feel endless. It’s a time for motivation and enthusiasm, but we all know that spark can fade when real life kicks in.

It’s easy to lose focus when challenges crop up or when your social media feed bombards you with new ideas you didn’t even know you needed (you probably didn’t). So, how do you keep the excitement alive without feeling overwhelmed or stuck?

So, how do you stay grounded, clear, and genuinely excited—not just in January but throughout the year? Fear not; I have got your back and am sharing six simple steps to help you stay on track while embracing the process and loving the journey.

Six Steps for Staying Grounded and Inspired

Most importantly, these aren’t ‘do once and forget’ tasks. They’re tools to revisit regularly to keep moving forward without losing yourself and to keep you grounded and motivated.

1. Take Time to Reflect

Before starting a new period, year, month or quarter, and before you rush into the next project, activity, or task in your business, take a moment to breathe and look back. Ask yourself:

  • What went well and why?
  • What did you learn (even from the challenging moments)?
  • And, most importantly—what’s worth celebrating?

Celebrating is non-negotiable, whether launching a project, getting through a challenging season, or simply taking consistent steps forward. It all counts.

2. Hold Onto Your Values (Tightly!)

Your values are your compass. They keep you rooted and guide your decisions, even when life feels overwhelming. Ask yourself:

  • What’s most important in my life and business right now?
  • How do I want to feel this year (quarter or month)?
  • Which choices support me, not just the shoulds?

When you’re clear about your values and aligned with your goals, it’s easier to focus on what truly motivates you. Plus, you’ll find ways to avoid getting stuck in the trap of ‘shoulds.’

3. Set Goals That Feel Right for You

Forget the ‘should’ goals. What matters is what excites you. To explore and understand what this is, ask yourself:

  • What kind of business (and life!) do I actually want?
  • What projects will energise me instead of draining me?
  • And how do I define success—on my terms?

Whether it’s a certain income, more free time, or meaningful impact, it’s your journey. The trick is setting goals that stretch you but don’t leave you stressed out.

4. Build a Flexible Plan (Leave Wiggle Room!)

Having a plan is brilliant—but over-planning can backfire – plan to succeed, not to overwhelm. You know the saying: We overestimate what we can do in a year and underestimate what’s possible in ten. Yes, I have done this, and the feeling of failure at the end of the year is not something I want you to experience!

Break your plan into manageable chunks, and set quarterly milestones and goals so you can celebrate and see your progress. This way, you also provide opportunities to adjust your plan if and when needed. Remember, it’s okay if things don’t go as planned—life never does, and sometimes, this opens up another exciting path or moment for growth.

5. Protect Your Joy and Energy

Here’s the truth: what’s the point if you’re hustling so hard you forget to enjoy the process? Make room for what fills your cup. Ask yourself:

  • How can I bring more joy into my business and life?
  • What boundaries do I need to keep burnout at bay?
  • How can I celebrate my progress—big or small?

Joy and rest aren’t optional; they’re fuel for sustainable growth.

6. Surround Yourself With the Right People

Thank goodness you don’t have to do it all alone. Surround yourself with people who lift you up: whether friends, a coach, or a like-minded community of professionals.

Speaking of communities, I’m a proud franchisee owner of the ONLE Networking groups in Wiltshire and Basingstoke. It’s a network for people who like people, and it offers an environment for those who genuinely care about the growth and success of others. Fancy a taste of what it’s like? Whether you’re scaling your business, chasing a new passion, or simply slowing down to prioritise what matters, what counts is that it feels good to you.
