How to build a time-rich business

How to experience a time-rich business

Time-rich refers to having an abundance of free time and control over how you spend it. It means having the freedom to allocate your time as you decide, in the business and out of it – doing more of what you love.

The challenge or problem is that you will fill it as fast as you create time or space in your diary. Have you ever heard a retired person say, ‘I’m busier now than ever. I don’t know how I found time to work’. However, a retiree is most likely, and I do hope they are, filling their time with things they love doing, not the mundane tasks you and I have to deal with!

Equally, and worth mentioning, you choose how you use your time, which is one of the most challenging aspects of being a business owner. And that is how to be productive and not busy, how to use the time you have to fulfil your business ambitions and goals.

So, what does a time-rich business look like?

Let’s face it: if you can nail being time-rich in your business, you are on to a winner, as it creates time freedom outside the office door. A good thing, right?

It is if you know how you will use that time. Again, it is challenging for some and can be riddled with guilt.

Yes, I have experienced guilt gnawing away at me while I’m having a relaxing massage. My mind whirred, and I was focused on everything I’ should’ be doing instead of fully experiencing the time I’d gifted myself.

Anyway, I’m sure that isn’t you, and you have an incredible list of things you’d like to be doing if ONLY the business allowed you.

So, in the context of business and entrepreneurship…

Time-rich means you have structured your business and work processes so you are not overwhelmed by tasks and responsibilities. You’ve created a business that gives you time to focus on strategic decision-making, creativity, or other high-impact activities. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

And in case you are now screaming at the screen, how? Here are three steps to help you achieve time richness in your business:

1. Identify Time-Consuming Tasks and Processes:

  • Audit Your Daily Routine and analyse your daily and weekly tasks. Then, identify repetitive tasks and activities that eat your time or don’t directly contribute to your business’s growth.
  • You can track your time using time-tracking tools or apps, analysing how much time you spend on different tasks to gain insights into where your time is spent. Although I admit to once forgetting to turn a timer off, meaning I spent three days solid, without even a comfort break on one task!
  • Prioritise Tasks and categorise high, medium and low value. So, high-value jobs directly impact your business’s growth and success, while low-value tasks are often administrative or repetitive. Meaning medium is everything in between.

2. Streamline and Delegate:

  • Automate repetitive and time-consuming tasks which you identified in step one above. They play a vital or distinct role in your business. Otherwise, you’ll need to ask yourself why you’re giving your time to them.
  • Identify tasks that can be outsourced or delegated to others, which may require hiring employees or freelancers to handle specific responsibilities. A great way of off-loading functions that can’t be automated and time-consuming.
  • Set clear priorities, focus on the high-impact tasks that align with your business goals, and delegate or eliminate low-impact jobs that contribute little to your bottom line.

3. Implement Time Management Strategies:

  • Allocate blocks of time in your diary for focused work on essential tasks. Remember to minimise interruptions during these blocks. Dedicate time for high-value projects and work that will move your business forward.
  • The market is awash with productivity apps and tools for working more efficiently. So, try a few out until you find what works for you, and it’s okay to revert to pen and paper, which is what I did and have never looked back.
  • It is vital to continuously assess your time management strategies and adjust your approach based on what works best for you and your business’s evolving needs. Schedule time to review your processes and systems and change accordingly.

Remember that becoming time-rich in your business is an ongoing process. It requires consistent effort and a willingness to adapt as your business evolves. By identifying time drains, streamlining processes, and implementing effective time management strategies, you can create more space in your schedule for strategic thinking, growth, and personal fun!
