The secret to achieving success: Define it

No secret, really, because unless you know what success is, how will you know what action to take and where to focus your attention? How will you know when you’ve arrived?
Success, or rather the image of success, is rammed down your throat at every turn. The images you see, the messages you read and the content you consume. The dream of seven, eight or even nine figures – the lifestyle of fast cars, big houses, and luxury holidays. The personal assistant, personal shopper and fitness instructor. It goes on and on and can leave you feeling underwhelmed, frustrated and lacking.
But what does success look like for you?
A few years ago, I wrote a letter to myself from ten years from the future, and the opening line was, congratulations, you’re a millionaire. Now, I’m chuckling to myself. What does that even mean? Is that cash in the bank, assets – a combination of both? 🤷♀️
I love that, according to this letter, I’m only working a four-day week, mortgage-free and taking eight weeks’ holiday a year. More chuckling from me, as my business is ten years young, and you will still find me at my desk on a Saturday morning on occasion, and I’m nowhere near eight weeks’ holiday.
But back to you.
I want you to know that your success is and should be totally unique to you – it’s what matters to you, and money is not the only benchmark.
Success is the change you influence, support and enable, the number of women or men you help, support and encourage. The hours it gifts you to do more of what you love with those you love, the income it provides you personally to live an incredible life, whatever incredible is to you,
It might be having the right support to grow your business, employees, freelancers or associates who give you time to write that book you’ve been dreaming about writing. Or to gift your time to causes close to your heart.
Success for you might be:
- Happiness, in all that you do, every day and in every way.
- Doing what you love every day without compromise and in your way.
- Balance, so a viable business without sacrificing your health and well-being.
- Fulfilling your purpose with integrity and honesty and without sacrificing your joy.
- Making a difference to those you choose to support, in your community, in your industry, the world.
In the words of Maya Angelou, success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.
Success is personal
Define it, head towards it with every fibre of your being, and never compromise. Do not get distracted by what others see success as or tell you it is. Everyone is unique, and therefore so is success.
Don’t let your success be a secret:
- Create an action plan that will take you towards YOUR success.
- Seek support and help where and before you need it.
- With your plan in mind, determine how you need to change.
- Seek support and assistance to change so you can lead the business to your success.
- Decide on your goals so you can track your progress and stay on track.
- Seek guidance on creating incredible goals and support for realising them.
Then act unapologetically because you deserve the success you dream of, and YOU are YOUR only competition.
